Weed Control

Controlling weeds and reducing self-seeding of existing weeds without the use of herbicides or soil fumigating employed by many large-scale food producers can be done with a variety of approaches.

Cultivation: Some of the annual crops are planted so that they can be cultivated with a tractor that enables us to prevent weed growth early in the growth cycle of our herbs.

Mulching: Straw, wood chips and planting paper serve as good mulching material and allow for a no-till approach to weed control, reducing disturbance to the soil and increasing moisture retention.

Mowing: A mixture of grasses and legumes form a living mulch in some perennial beds. Mowing controls weeds as the plants build the soil and increase diversity within the ecosystem.
