Soil Management
A crucial component of plant quality and environmental health is soil management. These methods help to improve nutrient availability, soil organism growth and moisture content.
Composting: Organic waste (herbs and trimmings not meeting quality standards for sale) from our on-site packing facility is sheet composted on our 30 acre farm to help build organic matter.
Cover Crops: The annual cycle of cover crops is designed to minimize erosion, prevent soil compaction, recycle nutrients and provide weed control. Cover crops, including winter rye, crimson clover, buckwheat and hairy vetch, are used on fallow fields year-round and on all fields during late fall, winter and early spring.
Natural Fertilizers: To meet the seasonal demands of our crops, an additional supply of nutrients is provided from natural fertilizers derived from sustainable, natural sources, such as fish emulsion and kelp.
