Pest Management
Natural Repellents: Garlic spray and Agroneem are our two primary insecticides. Both work well as repellants. In the instance of a major outbreak, the last resort is a soap- based spray which will kill some non-beneficial insects, such as aphids.
Row Covers: Utilizing a water and light permeable covering on at risk crops can be effective in minimizing damage from non-beneficial insects. By making the herbs inaccessible to the insects, damage is reduced or prevented.
Natural Predators: In keeping with our commitment to biological diversity, we maintain a presence, throughout the farm, of lady beetles, breeding/wintering over areas for preying mantis and habitat to attract parasitic wasps, bluebirds, swallows and other beneficial predators. From a nearby pond, a flock of geese make their daily walkthrough in search of grasshoppers and periodically return to the same area for nesting, just outside our administrative building.
