H2O Conservation
Our location in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia provides the farm with a year-round supply of water. In keeping with other efforts to reduce environmental impact, we employ water conservation methods to ensure we are not degrading the quality and sustainability of our water sources.
Drip Irrigation: The perennial beds are irrigated with a drip tape irrigation system that enables us to deliver water directly to the soil. This system reduces the potential for fungal diseases in our crops and significantly reduces unnecessary evaporation of this valuable resource.
Scheduling: The watering schedule takes into consideration the amount of water available for irrigation of the fields as well as the specific needs of the herbs in various stages of their growth cycle. Additionally, irrigation is restricted primarily to the coolest parts of the day to maximize the amount of water actually reaching the crops rather than evaporating in the heat of mid-day.
