Organic Garden-Overview
Shenandoah Growers' organic garden is another source of quality produce. The herbs are grown seasonally on our farm in harmony with the surrounding habitat and environment. Off-season we provide only USDA certified organic products grown to our exacting standards. As a privately owned, independent company, we are proud to contribute to our local economy while producing organic herbs for customers throughout the mid-Atlantic region. Throughout this process we remain committed to herb flavor and quality, personal health and environmental stewardship.
To maintain an organic growing operation, we employ sustainable farming techniques such as soil building, natural insect controls and weed management. These methods enable us to grow crops free of unnatural hormones and inorganic chemical residues. As a result, our herbs are healthy and working conditions are safe.
As the foundation of our garden, the soil management program utilizes composting, cover cropping and natural fertilizers to increase organic matter and biological activity. Healthy soil retains increased levels of moisture and when combined with effective irrigation techniques can significantly reduce water usage.
The management of non-beneficial insects is achieved through natural methods which include attracting bluebirds and swallows to the area, applying approved natural repellents and planting beneficial flowers.
As an organic producer, our farm has been certified under Virginia or Federal standards since 1995. Maintaining strict adherence to organic industry standards is a commitment on our part to ensure the longevity of our farm and to protect the environment as we produce our herbs. It also guarantees that all of our organically labeled produce meets the requirements of the USDA National Organic Program (NOP) and is therefore labeled “USDA Organic.”
As a consumer, you can be assured that our products not only celebrate flavor but that we are committed to the health of our customers, our employees and to environmental conservation
