Winter seasonal eating is all about staying warm with dishes that are both nutritious and comforting.  Because much of the farmland in North America is dormant during January and February, now is the time to make the most out of the root vegetables that were stored away after the autumnal harvest.

Get the most out of rutabagas, turnips, carrots, and potatoes with this hearty bowl of Farmhouse chowder. This creamy chicken chowder gets extra flavor from fresh dill and parsley.  The perfect way to keep the cold out.

Give turnips a more exotic spin with this turnip and mustard seed curry.  Topped with plenty of fresh dill, this is a great way to enjoy a root vegetable that sometimes gets short shrift during the winter months.

Finally, don’t forget a little something sweet.  Nothing warms up the house like a tray of cookies baking in the oven.  These sweet lemon, thyme shortbread cookies are given extra zing from fresh thyme and lemon zest–it is citrus season on the west coast, after all.  They taste even better dipped in chocolate.
